"The Flog" or Fleming's Blog is a space designed for students in Mrs. Fleming's classes to reveal their thinking about a variety of texts we encounter throughout the year. This space is also meant to practice thinking and writing skills needed for more formal communication. My hopes are that this becomes a convenient way to expand on and enrich our classroom experiences. Maturity and integrity are the expectations for proper use and behavior when blogging. All school terms of use in technology apply when blogging on this site.

Reflective Essay Blog

A Reflective essay expresses the writer's thoughts and feelings in response to a personal experience, idea, or topic.  Both nonfiction pieces that were read in class "Before Hip-Hop Was Hip-Hop" and "A Celebration of Grandfathers" were reflective essays though the authors' styles were drastically different.  Reflective essays are typically based on very personal topics and therefore take on a tone that is equally personal and passionate.  However, the each author's approach to syntax and diction varies greatly.  For example, "Before Hip-Hop Was Hip-Hop" was written very informally using diction that contained slang terms in order to honestly capture the Hip-Hop culture the author experienced.  The syntax (sentence structure) was diverse and even included single word sentences such as "Loyalty" to add emphasis at key moments.  "A Celebration of Grandfathers" by Rudolfo A. Anaya, was piece with a similarly personal topic however the tone was more serious and respectful.  In order to show his respect for his culture he chose diction that was authentic to his grandfather's culture.
For this blog assignment, compose a reflective essay.  The topic is completely open with the exception that it should  contain your thoughts and feelings in response to a personal experience, idea, or topic.  Your syntax (sentence structure) should be guided by the tone you are trying to achieve based on the topic.  You should select diction (word choice) that achieves your particular tone as well.  For example, if I am writing a reflective essay on my "spirited" childhood growing up in the woods of Port Tobacco, Maryland (yes, I spent my childhood there!) then my tone would be playful and joyous.  Therefore, I would  organize my thoughts, structure my sentences, and choose diction that really captures this overall attitude towards by subject (tone).  Choose your topic wisely and you will see how easily you can get lost in the art of writing about a personal experience of your choice!
